Topic: Many manufactured food and drink products contain high levels of sugar, which causes many health problems. Sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar.
It is an undeniable fact that sugar consumption has become one of the most serious public health issues of our time. Many processed foods and drinks contain extremely high levels of sugar, which lead to various health problems. I completely agree with the idea that sugary products should be made more expensive in order to reduce their consumption.
To begin with, sugar is not just unhealthy; it is also highly addictive. Scientific studies show that sugar stimulates the brain in a way similar to drugs like nicotine, making people crave it more over time. However, unlike cigarettes or alcohol, sugar is not taken seriously and is legally sold everywhere without any strong restrictions. This situation normalizes sugar consumption and increases addiction, especially among children and teenagers.
Moreover, overconsumption of sugar is strongly linked to life-threatening diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, liver failure, and even cancer. Despite these devastating effects, sugar remains easily accessible and extremely cheap. This affordability encourages people to consume it regularly, often without realizing the long-term consequences.
It is also important to acknowledge that the health industry indirectly benefits from this problem. The more people become sick due to high sugar intake, the more profit is made by pharmaceutical companies and private hospitals. If society were genuinely healthy, the medical sector would lose a significant amount of income. For this reason, strict action against sugar consumption is often ignored or delayed.
However, increasing the price of sugary products would be an effective solution. When harmful products become more expensive, people naturally reduce their consumption. This strategy has already worked in many countries for tobacco products. Additionally, nobody actually needs artificial sugar to survive. Natural sugars found in fruits or honey are more than enough for the human body. Therefore, people could still satisfy their sweet cravings in a healthier way without relying on harmful manufactured sugar.
In conclusion, sugar is a dangerous substance that destroys health slowly and silently. Making sugary products more expensive would significantly reduce their consumption and protect public health. Governments should take responsibility and apply strict pricing policies along with awareness campaigns to prevent more people from becoming victims of sugar addiction.
